How to Convert WebP to PNG Without Losing Transparency
Convert WebP images to PNG while preserving transparent backgrounds, understanding quality limits, and keeping files local.
WebP and PNG both support transparent pixels, but they serve different workflows. WebP is designed for efficient web delivery, while PNG remains a dependable lossless format for editing, design handoffs, screenshots, and applications that do not accept WebP.
1.Does WebP to PNG preserve transparency?
Yes—when the source WebP contains an alpha channel, converting it to PNG can preserve that transparent background. PixelShift decodes the image in your browser and exports the rendered pixels as PNG without requiring a cloud upload.
Keep the Fill White BG option disabled. Filling the background intentionally replaces transparent pixels with white, which is useful for formats or workflows that do not support alpha but is not appropriate when transparency must remain intact.
2.Convert WebP to PNG in four steps
- Open the PixelShift WebP to PNG converter.
- Add one or more WebP files by dragging them into the page or using the file picker.
- Select PNG and confirm that Fill White BG is not enabled.
- Choose Convert All, then download one PNG or the complete batch as a ZIP.
3.What “lossless” means after conversion
PNG encoding is lossless: it stores the exported pixel values without introducing a new lossy compression step. However, converting to PNG cannot recover detail that was already discarded when a lossy WebP was created.
The PNG may also be larger than the WebP. That is expected because the formats use different compression methods and PNG prioritizes exact pixel reproduction rather than the smallest delivery size.
4.When PNG is the better output
- A design or editing application does not accept WebP.
- You need a transparent asset for a legacy workflow.
- You are archiving an exported bitmap without adding another lossy encode.
- A form, CMS, or print workflow explicitly requires PNG.
